Some Information on Associated Content
November 28th, 2006 by (Michy)
Recently, I have been writing quite a bit and promoting a site called Associated Content. They have a good concept. You won’t get rich posting on their site, but they are a good way to make some extra cash, and build a bit of an online portfolio where you can actually show a paid byline.
I’m not going to complain too much about some of the recent changes they have gone through, but I am not pleased with them all. Still, the site does have a good concept. You can write pretty much whatever you want, submit it for payment consideration and make a few bucks – can’t beat that. Now, if you are a freelance writer who is used to being paid $50 – $400 bucks plus per published article, AC might not be your thing. Their average payment is somewhere between $8-12 bucks per 600-800 word article or so, but it does allow you to write about whatever you want to write about.
What I’ve been using AC for is to post articles that I have been unable to sell or that I have been unable to find a market for. I also write about things that truly interest me, much like I would on a blog post but a bit more professionally, and I get paid some scratch to do so. Can’t beat that.
However, if you are going to consider writing for Associated Content, you should know this… the entire site really is in BETA mode. They aren’t advertising this fact, but it’s clear when you visit the forums or actually devle into the site. There are some errors with rendering pages, connecting to some of the articles. The voting functions don’t always work properly, and here recently, they’ve rolled out a new format change and some other features they are calling inter-linking. I’m not really fond of the inter-linking for several reasons.
First, they link by keywords only, and they apparently are doing this fully automated. Therefore, one of my articles about Water Conservation Tips, linked the word ‘running’ in the context of ‘running water’ to other articles about running for your health and fitness.
There’s two inherent problems with this. 1) people who want to save money and conserve water are probably not all that interested in learning about running for fitness, and 2) it makes it appear as though I, the author of the piece, have put that link in there and either condone or recommend those articles. Neither is probably true. It’s not that I don’t recommend the articles, but I haven’t probably even read most of them.
They also have something they do with themes. One man wrote a satircal piece about writings in rebellion against the changes on the site, and in the themes, it linked to breat feeding. We still can’t figure out what this has to do with his article, but I came up with a few comical ways it might relate.
Anyway, the point here is, they need to work on this, and it’s a shame it was not properly tested before they rolled it out on the site and made it a live feature. It was a bit upsetting to me, and I’ll admit I considered leaving the site over it all.
I have been assured that the errors are being corrected and they are saying some exciting things are coming to help new authors and current ones really promote their work and get lots of readers.
I think they have a great concept – I hope they work out the kinks and make the site better. I do still recommend them, as long as everyone is aware that they are still making changes, working out some technical kinks, and doing some interesting changes.
If this is okay for you, then by all means, sign up. I have made around $500 bucks with them since starting, and they pay quickly, via PayPal, about three times per week. It takes between 7-10 working days to get an article reviewed and approved and about 2-3 days to receive payment after it is approved. They also do instant PayPal to PayPal transfers, so you do not have to pay any PayPal fees when they pay you.
Good luck if you decide to join, and please, drop me a note so I can add you to my subscriber list and help you increase your page views.
Keep writing!
